Colonial Kids Summer Program
Historic London Town and Gardens will host four sessions of the Colonial Kids Summer Program, a weeklong day program designed to immerse children in early Maryland life in an authentic, historic environment. The first session will run from Monday, June 21 through Friday, June 25.  The second session will run from Monday, July 12 through Friday, July 16. Children will live in the “lost town” of London and participate in the crafts, activities and chores of a Colonial-American family, while also learning the basics of archaeology and historic preservation.

Each day, participants will experience true Colonial life by wearing traditional clothing and preparing their own hearth cooked lunch. All activities are hands-on and include fencing with padded swords, rudimentary drumming, making beeswax candles, creating Colonial toys, and writing with quill and ink. Students will learn how to use historic written documents to study the people who lived in the Colonial seaport of historic London Town and get their hands dirty participating in an ongoing archaeological excavation. Archaeologists from the Anne Arundel County Lost Towns Project will work with the children to unearth London Town’s past and teach the importance of preserving history.

Historic London Town’s summer program is affiliated with Colonial Camp based in North Carolina. The staff of Colonial Camp is comprised of former teachers who present year-round Colonial American residential summer programs, daytime field trips, overnight encampments and special events in Maryland and Virginia.

The Colonial Kids Summer Program is open to children who have completed first through sixth grade during the 2009-2010 school year. The cost is $309, including lunch, and runs from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Aftercare is available. The London Town Foundation will award a full-scholarship to a deserving child in the local area. If anyone is interested in donating a scholarship, please contact Lisa Robbins, Education Programs Administrator, at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
