Science in the Garden:

This program teaches 2nd-5th graders about using scientific evidence and observation to study plant and animal interactions and plant defenses. School groups are taken on a hike through London Town’s eight-acre Woodland Gardens which features native and exotic plant species where they observe and collect evidence on the interdependency between plants and animals. Once indoors, students will form hypotheses about plant adaptations to the environment.  They will then test their hypotheses by conducting an experiment with a “tough-o-meter,” collecting data on the toughness of leaves bitten by insects. Various herbs are also used to demonstrate the use of smell and taste as part of plant defense mechanisms.

In addition to a pre-visit teaching packet, an educational study kit is available to teachers to help prepare students in the classroom for this field trip. Obtain a  teacher’s packet with pre- and post-visit activities here.
