Freedom on the Horizon

Saturday, September 1, 2018

6:30pm - 8:00pm

William Brown House

Living history interpreter Natassia Parker-Gross debuts her one woman show on the extraordinary life of Oney Judge, who escaped in 1796 after spending much of her life enslaved by Martha & George Washington. Born around 1773 at Mount Vernon, Judge escaped the Washingtons after learning she was to be "gifted" to the First Lady's granddaughter for her wedding.  Her remarkable story was documented by multiple abolitionist newspapers in the 19th century and gives a detailed look into enslaved life in the Chesapeake in the decades leading up to emancipation.

Following the play will be a question and answer session with writer and performer Natassia Parker-Gross.
