Build a Legacy with London Town

Consider making a gift to ensure that the London Town Foundation – the 501c3 nonprofit that operates Historic London Town and Gardens – will continue providing life-enriching history, gardens, and the arts for our growing community. Designate London Town Foundation as the beneficiary of your will, trust, retirement account and/or life insurance policy.

Benefits of including London Town in your Will, Trust, Retirement Account and/or Life Insurance Policy:

  • Easy to do! Establish or modify at any time.

  • You remain in control of your assets throughout your lifetime

  • Enjoy an estate tax deduction

  • Reduce your family’s burden of taxes

  • Your gift provides future support for London Town

How can I do this?

  • Add London Town to your will or revocable trust using this simple language:

    • Specific Bequest (a Specific Bequest allows you to to give a specific amount of money, a percentage of your estate or trust or a certain piece of property to London Town at the time of your death): “I give and bequeath ( $____or [specific asset] or __ % of my estate/trust assets) to the London Town Foundation (Tax ID 52-1396159), a nonprofit charitable organization headquartered at 839 Londontown Road, Edgewater, MD 21037, to be used for its general uses and purposes.”

    • Residual Bequest (a Residual Bequest allows you to give the remainder or balance of your estate or trust to London Town after your will or trust has made gifts of money and/or property to your loved ones): “I give and bequeath all the rest, residue, and remainder of my property, real, personal, or mixed to the London Town Foundation (Tax ID 52-1396159), a nonprofit charitable organization headquartered at 839 Londontown Road, Edgewater, MD 21037, to be used for its general uses and purposes.

  • Designate London Town Foundation as a full, partial or contingent beneficiary of your retirement account, including an IRA, 401k, 403b or pension. Use a beneficiary designation form as provided by your plan custodian.

    • Good news! The IRA Charitable Rollover (Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes Act of 2015) is now permanent, allowing charitably minded taxpayers 70 ½ or older to transfer up to $100,000 annually to charity without the gift being treated as a taxable distribution. Talk to your IRA administrator for more details.

    • Designating 501(c)(3) organizations as beneficiaries of your retirement accounts can be more tax efficient than gifting these accountings to family members or other loved ones (other than spouses) because your estate can receive an estate tax charitable deduction and the charity receives the retirement account income-tax free.  When gifting retirement accounts to individuals (other than spouses), your estate may incur significant estate taxes, and the individual can incur significant income taxes. Gifting to London Town, however, is tax-free!

  • Name London Town Foundation as a beneficiary of your life insurance policy, ensuring your estate benefits from an estate tax charitable deduction for the value of your gift.

  • Alternatively, donate an existing life insurance policy to London Town to enjoy an income tax deduction, the ability to deduct future premium payments (if any) and if the policy is on your life, you’ll even remove the value of the policy from your taxable estate!
